Don’t be scared of healthy high fat foods… embrace their health properties! Over decades of scaremongering in the media, low fat food products have become quite the norm. Our bodies crave fat, and for a good reason. Every cell in our body needs fat to be healthy and plumped up. You don’t want your cells to look like shrivelled up raisins do you?
Fat is so important for keeping your skin moisturised, and fat doesn’t encourage weight gain anymore than carbohydrates or protein like once thought! So what consists of a healthy fat? Healthy fats include most of the naturally occurring fats in nature, from good quality meats to olives.
Sources & Benefits of omega-3
The healthiest fats are considered the omega-3 fats, which are found predominantly in oily fish such as mackerel, herring, salmon, tuna, sardines and anchovies. Other healthy food sources of fat include nuts, seeds, olives, avocado and grass-fed meats. It’s all about balance, so you don’t want to be having only one type of fat over and over again in your diet. Try to include a range of healthy foods containing fat. When oils are exposed to heavy processing or heat, this is when they become bad for us.
The oils which are ruined when heated to high temperatures are considered to be ‘delicate oils’. The oils which are not so good for frying include most vegetable oils such as sunflower oil and corn oil. One of the best oils for cooking is actually coconut oil. Get in the habit of adding 1 tbsp. olive oil, walnut oil or avocado oil to salads.
